Albertans, and Canadians as a whole have become increasingly aware of the impact of an aging population, the increasing cost of health care and the demand for trained health care providers. Industry Canada states that; " the care of the sick will change more in the next 20 years than it has in the preceding 2000". The challenges faced by government and health care institutions have been in the headlines on a consistent basis and are well documented.
A government document, Prepared for Growth; Building Alberta's Labor Supply, outlined occupational forecasts for Alberta over the next 3 years. The document identified health care as an industry where labor shortages are expected to be especially severe. There has been a number of initiatives developed by government and the health care sector to support recruitment, training and ongoing development of health care workers.
The need for trained health care workers was transparent. Over the past few years, health care institutions, private and public care facilities and educational institutions have implemented a number of strategies to recruit, train and maintain employees.
Calgary is currently in the midst of a critical shortage of well trained, competent health care workers especially in the field of Health Care Aides / Personal Care Attendants, also known as nursing attendants, nursing assistants, nurse's aides and community support workers. Our educational institution has worked closely with health care agencies and health care facilities to respond to this need.. Ninety-eight ( 98% ) of our students are employed upon graduation and are well received by industry. We are confident that the training we deliver meets and exceeds industry standards and is responding to the critical, on-going labor market need.
