New Course - Podology

 FOOT CARE SPECIALTY KINESIOLOGISTS/PEDORTHISTS,RN'S & LPN'S

PODOLOGY

We are all aware that the feet have been neglected for far too long.  Type of ambulation, disease process and the biomechanics of the patient will affect the condition of the feet.  Proper Foot Care, although often overlooked, is essential to good health and well being. Understanding the structure of the foot on the inside is a key component in assessing the foot on the outside. The knowledge, skills and care requirements in this area are significant in assessing the conditon of the lower leg, foot, skin and nails,  preventing injury and infection and in promoting independence and a sense of well being.  There is a critical shortage of care givers who can perform extensive foot care services, not just cutting a patient's toenails.

PODOLOGY is an in-depth study of the anatomy and physiology of the foot, skin and nails as well as the care of the foot and involves comprehensive specialized medical training. The word Pedicure, means care of the foot, skin and nails. However, this is not a Pedicure course, although medical pedicure training is included in the program. We do not refer to our foot care as a pedicure, but rather, "Foot Care Service". Also included in this program is the teachng of a foot and half leg massage. Students must perform a minimum of 20 practicum hours of foot care including the submission of the documentation as instructed in class.

The Podology program is an 11 week intensive and comprehensive study of the foot, skin and nails and their disorders and treatments. Also included is Biomechanics and the Gait Cycle as well as Orthotics. Instruction includes lectures, videos, case studies, class participation with questions and answers and hands on application of the clinical skills.

The program is currently open to Kinesiologists/Pedorthists, RN's and LPN's.

The Podology Program includes: a home-study theoretical component, classroom/clinical instruction, practicum hours and 2 written exams. Successful completion of the program  will require approximately 15-20 hours per week of study.
Upon registration the student will be given the dates for Podology I  as well as the return dates for Podology II.
Successful completion of the Podology program will result in a certificate of completion as a PODOLOGIST.

Upon successful completion of the Podology program the graduate will then apply for the distinguished designation of Certified Podologist - C Pod (c) in Canada.
